Newport News (actually their parent company, Spiegel) has a line called Shape FX that is designed to “make the body you have look like the body you want.” In a way that tagline says it all, but even if you already have the body you want these styles are designed to complement the female form just beautifully. Most of the pieces come with a built in power-mesh lining, making them a bit pricier, but they are well worth it. I buy these just for the amazing curve-flattering fit and classy, timeless styles.
This dress is one of my all-time favorites from the Shape FX line. Just the right amount of ruching down both sides, a very flattering sleeve length and that amazing neckline… I usually pair this with my Avon pendant and the flesh-tone fishnets from Hue. Oh, and in the close-up above, you can see the coveted magnetic nail polish in action! I had to order this stuff through Amazon because I couldn’t find it anywhere locally. I totally love it, but at $15 per bottle I probably won’t be stocking up on many colors!!
One of the best features of the Shape FX site is that you can search the collection by body type. So, if you are self-conscious about a particular area, the site will recommend styles designed to eliminate the negative and accentuate the positive. :) They carry everything from semi-casual pieces to dinner dresses to career wear. I’m dying to try out the slacks, but pants are always such a weird fit on me that I hesitate to buy them online.
Is there a particular brand or line of clothing that makes you “feel” better than others? Please share!

Does this line run true to size? I've been eyeing an ankle length fishtail skirt from them for a long time, but I know that Newport News sizing is weird sometimes (I'm an XS in shirts but a size 12 in bottoms apparently.)
katysioux, in my experience Shape FX is *usually* true to size... I order everything in XS and the fit is usually divine (better than Newport News, where XS often runs big on me). But I did order one fishtail skirt from Shape FX about a year ago that was too wide for me and WAY too long (luckily, I was able to take it in a bit myself). Not sure if it's the same skirt you are looking at, or if the sizing is the same now...
The UK has some cheaper magnetic polishes, about £6 with the magnet :)
I really like the dress, suits you and sounds very versatile. Like the idea behind your blog, wearing darker more gothic clothes and not looking like a teenager certainly can be a challenge but I love it! Never thought I would like patent shoes but seeing how wearable they are here makes me lust after some! :)
Hmm... A brand that makes me feel better would definitely be Hydraulic jeans. I don't wear jeans anywhere near as often as I used to, but these jeans always had the best fit! They don't sell them at my mall anymore though, so I haven't bought any new ones in a long time. But as far as jeans went they were my favorite. ;D
What a nice dress! I like the gathering at the top. My grand mother married -42 and her wedding dress has the same look with gathering at the shoulders and over the chest (but with a wide skirt). Some things never goes out of style! It's always nice to get good shoping tips.
that dress looks so simple but still beautiful! and i love your shoes!
and for the brands that make us feel better, i always feel best in heavy red things, pricy but pure love :-D i set myself a monthly-purchse limit for them XD
That looks like a super comfortable dress too.
That pendant is gorgeous!
I don't really have a favorite brand...I'm too all over the place, being a thrift shopper mainly! :/
Now that's what I call the perfect "little black dress" -- a must in all wardrobes! I love the pendant and the bracelets -- very pretty.
Enigma, £6?! Do you happen to know the brand? I wonder if I could order them, or if the shipping would just make up the difference... :) Thank you for your nice words about my blog. Dressing "dark" definitely gets more challenging the older you get, but that's part of what I love about it!
Silver Snow, I've heard of Hydraulic jeans, but never tried them (yet). I, too have trouble getting a good fit in jeans! Thanks for the tip.
linnea-maria, that's awesome! I adore the styles of the 40s. Haven't seen many wedding dresses of that era, but I'm inspired to do some Googling now! :)
kakuidori, thank you! Ooh, I do love Heavy Red. I need more of their pieces. They are one of the Goth brands that I find most wearable (not overdone, and not cheap!). Great idea to give yourself a monthly HR budget! ;)
Hexotica, it is pretty comfortable! I so envy those who can manage good thrift finds on a regular basis. I just don't seem to have the gift! Or maybe it's just that the thrift stores in my town are not so good. L.A. has lots, but they are almost as pricy as buying retail because of the vintage trend... :(
Le Professeur, agreed. No matter how much black we own, we each need the perfect LBD!
Its a brand called 17, only available from Boots.

Don't think they ship to the US though. I'm pretty sure you can still send nail polish internationally as long as its surface mail and not airmail.
I thought I saw the Boots line in Target recently?!?
Ooh well thats good then! 17 is a make up brand for Boots, similar to No.7 but cheaper. Hope target have it :D
Ooh! I will be keeping an eye out at my Super Target! Thanks for the tips, ladies!!
Stunning dress, it indeed flatters your figure nicely! I love shapewear, I sometimes like to hide some annoying details, but for the rest, I wear it because of the curve-flattering fit too. It might be a bit of cheating, but I feel way more confident that way. ^^
I love this dress, it's so simple and elegant. The neck and bust lines are both gorgeous and I love the shoes and jewellery with it. In fact I really love the shoes! As for brands I just have some favorite shops, such as Primark and H&M but no brands really. Having said that, I do have a new pair of Demonias in the post so I may change my mind on that soon! :)
Love that necklace. I looked at those NPN pieces and thought about trying some. Glad to hear from a real person about them. I wasn't expecting this to happen but my feet seem to only feel comfy in Jeffrey Campbells now. Other than that, my tastes are pretty much across the board.
I love looking at all your amazing outfits, and you have very nice and fashionable taste (though I don't wear much gothic inspired clothing, my sister is a goth and I certainly appreciate the look). However I just wanted to add a little comment to this post. It is often conceived in our popular culture that curves are a bad thing and only stick thin model types are allowed to be called "beautiful" (i'm not saying you're saying that, mind you). However, I happen to have many, quite substantial curves and, much to my surprise, have found many men who much prefer generous curves to anything else. My boyfriend has even jokingly complained about me trying to lose weight and get rid of all my "delicious curves" as he puts it. So just to let all the ladies out there know that you don't have to get rid of curves to feel good about yourself, just find the guys who like the curves ;).
P.S. In case anyone might be confused, i'm not advocating not exercising or eating healthily and instead just being content with an overly curvy, but unhealthy body. I'm saying be healthy, be active and eat good foods, and know that however you look you are a precious individual and there are plenty of people out there who think you look beautiful.
Raven, thank you for your kind words about my blog, and your insightful input! I certainly was not intending to advocate that any one body type is any better than another, but simply acknowledging that most women have things they wish they could improve about themselves, or at least desire to accentuate the features they like most, which is what Shape FX does so well. I never speak in terms of "right or wrong" body types on my blog, or address weight in any way because I feel it is a personal choice. Some men prefer heavier women, some prefer slim women, and some don't care either way. Some women like themselves slim, some are more comfortable curvier. Slim girls are often curvy, too (I certainly don't consider myself "stick thin," as I do have shapely hips and a substantial [proportionally speaking] backside.... lol). I love it when women of ANY shape or size feel confident, but I also support those who aren't totally happy and want to make changes for the sake of their own self-esteem. Everyone is different, and everyone should take the road that will lead them to the greatest happiness. And you are so right: it's so important to find a partner who is compatible, and they are out there! :)
