Rule-Breaking Monday: Magenta Pumps

Please excuse the blur… Today was an off day for photography. We went out shooting photos of the car yesterday and I forgot to return the camera to my studio settings afterward. So we’ll call this a “soft focus” and pretend like it’s a good thing. :)
I ordered these colorful shoes from Newport News (along with a purple pair) and found that they were just too colorful for my taste in footwear. The platform and the heel part were already black, so I hoped that adding some black trim would tone the rest of the shoe down a bit. A bit of Shoe Goo came to the rescue, and I was much more satisfied with them!

A Resurrection

The club confusion in Los Angeles continues, but last night we got lucky. For the past couple of years there has been an awesome Old School Goth night once a month. Recently it was announced that this wonderful night would come to an end in order to accommodate another club that was displaced due to a venue closing. As it turns out, the displaced club didn’t do so well in the new venue, so the night was returned to the Goths.
You get lots of pictures today, because I managed to finish getting ready early last night!
Here’s a detail of the makeup. Pardon my funny expression; it’ll take me a bit to get used to the close-ups! I love to use a bit of purple or magenta on the inside corner of my eyes to add some interest amongst the darkness. Usually my eye makeup doesn’t vary much. I have the “going out” look and the “work” look and those hardly change. I’ll try to mix it up a bit so the blog stays interesting.
Lips tend to change more often. Sometimes I just go with a deep eggplant, sometimes true red, sometimes just a dark gloss, but most often this burgundy with black outline. This is my favorite club look for lips.

This particular club also features Death Rock, Old-School Industrial and Punk, so there was quite an interesting crowd in attendance. I’m hoping all of the support will ensure that the club remains in existence for a good long time!

The fabulous fishtail skirt was a fortuitous find from Newport News. The corset is Gallery Serpentine, of course. Everything else is from random mall stores, except the sequin choker which was made by me.

A Little Thank-You
I woke up to a delightful surprise today. The lovely Hexotica posted a review of her favorite blogs, and she included the nicest write-up of Sophistique Noir. A Bit of Girly Fun

Today I am breaking the rules of my own blog by dressing in a way that’s neither mature nor sophisticated (but cute!). The impetus was the completion of a pair of big lace hair bows I had been constructing, one of which you see here. They seem so cute and girly so I felt the urge to pair them with this babydoll dress from Forever 21, and decided to go with it.
I wasn’t in the mood for much makeup today, so I didn’t even apply eyeliner. To keep things from getting boring, I went with a pink metallic lip gloss. It actually looks much better in the photos than in person, as the metallic really doesn’t flatter more mature skin. (UPDATE: Five minutes after I typed that, my husband saw the lip gloss and fell in love with it. I guess he doesn’t see the fine lines any more than my camera does. Lucky me!!)
It’s still windy and chilly here, so more long arm warmers today. These are homemade. I just took some high-quality swim suit material from the fabric store, cut it into rectangles and stitched a seam, then finished the edges with a zig-zag stitch. Ok, that's a lame tutorial, but it's a start. :)
I would not call this look Lolita-inspired or anything (people tend to ask me that when I wear something like this); to me, Lolita is something completely different. I just call it a Goth girl having a little fun.

It’s Thursday, Which is My Friday, but Feels Like a Monday

I woke up late today thanks to Perseus going through an extra-naughty spell (mostly at 4 AM). I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in a week. Fortunately I at least had an idea in my head of what I wanted to wear today… But I hadn’t really ironed out the details (no pun intended – I rarely iron!). I just received this top from eBay and was dying to wear it. I figured since it was casual it would go best with a plain, straight skirt, but of course this morning I couldn’t find the skirt in question (turns out it was still hanging in the laundry room after last weekend’s washing!). Then I realized that patent shoes were too fancy for such a casual outfit, so I had to change. I ended up choosing my Dr. Marten’s Mary Janes, which I don’t really like with skirts but I still have not hemmed up any of my new pants (I really hate doing blind hems!!!).
By the time I finally had my body covered, there was no time for accessories, make-up OR photos if I was to get to work on time. So of course, I added an accessory, did my make-up AND took photos before texting my boss to tell her I would be late today. :) Priorities, right? Well, yesterday was a totally crap day so I didn’t feel too bad about putting my blog before the client today.
Can you tell that I’m burnt out this week? Apparently it causes me to use a lot of parenthetical statements...
The bright side is there is Persian food on the menu tonight (taking a break from our usual Sushi Thursday), if I can just make it through this Thursday-Friday-Monday.
What do you guys have planned for this weekend? I need some good ideas for some fun!!

Another Puffy-Sleeve Delight

Ok, so it’s not as easy as you might think to come up with titles for these posts every day!! ;-D
I suppose these sleeves are not so much “puffy” as drapey. Either way, they are a win for me. Like my puffy-sleeve sweater, this top is from Victoria’s Secret. The lace camisole underneath is from Newport News. Awesome sparkly pendant is from Forever 21.
When I was a younger Goth in the late 80s, we could rarely find Goth-friendly clothes or accessories at “normal” retailers. I really love that the dark aesthetic has infiltrated the mainstream to the point that it has these days. In most cases, I can get higher-quality clothing at better prices than if I am forced to go through Goth-specific retailers, plus the pieces are easier to mix and match because they aren’t so uber-Goth. Rather than buying “Goth clothing” for my everyday wardrobe I bring the Goth into what I wear through my styling choices. Not only does this force me to be more creative, but makes it so much easier to find work-appropriate outfits that appeal to me. Of course, club clothes are a different story. :)
On the weekends, I would pair this top with a long, flowing skirt. For work, I thought that combination approached the “too Goth for work” line so I went with the satin pencil skirt you’ve all seen here before. You’ll see a lot of that skirt. It’s comfortable, the perfect fit for me, and it goes with everything.
I also felt that the sheer stockings toned down the look a bit. When I go all black for work, I think it helps to let the legs show some skin tone.
Yes, I wear either stocking or tights pretty much at all times (except with pants). Even with open-toe shoes. I think they bring more sophistication to an outfit than bare legs. Not that bare legs are bad, but it's a totally different look to me. My stockings match my skin tone almost perfectly, but they add a sheen and a sleek look that I love. Plus sheer stockings make me feel a bit vintage!
